ARPS #15 – Ice-cream Seller of Chinatown

ARPS #15 - Ice-cream Seller of Chinatown
The final image from my successful Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) panel which I submitted in September 2003… and the inspiration for my yearly visits to Chinatown during Chinese New Year ๐Ÿ™‚

This was taken during Chinese New Year in 2003 in Chinatown, Singapore. Photoshop filter effects? No, just the simple use of a tripod and setting the shutter to expose for 2 seconds. The ice-cream man and his customers remained relatively sharp compared to the busy crowd around them which was blurred out because of the long shutter speed. This help to convey the idea of an oasis of calm in a sea of chaos.

ARPS #14 – Weighing The Scale

ARPS #14 - Weighing The Scale
The second last picture from my ARPS Panel

The amount of activity at the Tekka Market, Singapore never fails to surprise me. I caught this picture during one of my very first visits to the market in 2003. The balcony overlooking the main market area provided me with a refreshing overhead angle with which I captured the activity of this busy seafood stall. To emphasize the layout of the stallholder and her customers further, I have applied selective masking and desaturation to the rest of the peripheral elements of the shot.

By the way, I have submitted one of my earlier posts, “Elation” for the photo challenge at Photo Friday. This week’s theme is “Success”. Do vote for me if you like the shot ๐Ÿ™‚

ARPS #13 – An Animated Conversation

ARPS #13 - An Animated Conversation
Image #13 from my ARPS series

An animated chit-chat session among two men on a sunny morning at Chinatown, Singapore served as the subjects of interest for this shot taken in 2003. I was fortunate to get a high vantage point to capture their actions in total unawareness! ๐Ÿ˜› I thought that the patterns of the benches in contrast to the diagonal arrangment of the floor tiles gave the picture an overall sense of dynamism.

By the way, do check out my dad’s revamped photoblog, which has been modelled after the template I have here, powered on WordPress 2.0. Hope you will enjoy the pictures there as much as you have enjoyed mine ๐Ÿ™‚
