I have been wanting to get good glass at a focal length of 300mm for quite some time, especially after I moved up to full-frame with the 5D Mark III — the absence of the focal length “multipler” effect meant that I no longer have the reach I used to have with my older DSLRs. I finally got that “dream-lens” yesterday. Venturing out to the Marina Barrage for some pictures this morning, I caught sight of this lone heron by the pier at the reservoir. The longer reach of the lens certainly came in useful

Another picture from the tofu factory in Solo City… The environment of the factory certainly had the right atmosphere for photography. Coming from obsessively-clean Singapore, I do wonder about the hygenine standards of the food produced here. I was certainly not too keen to eat tofu for lunch right after visiting this place!

Seen at the same market we visited in Solo City… I cannot imagine how terrified these chicks would have been when they were dyed into these psychedelic colours. Chickens and chicks dyed in ridiculous colours seem to be the rage in Indonesia. I have seen similar ones on a visit to Bali two years ago. Even if there are laws to prevent such cruelty to animals in Indonesia, I don’t think much is done to enforce them

One of the workers in the tofu factory in Solo City had brought her children to work. The kids were having fun assisting in the tofu-making but when work was over, it was bath time — using the water that had been used to cook the beans earlier!

The above was taken at a traditional tofu factory located in Solo City. Actually, without our guides, we would never have found this factory that was tucked innocuously on a street. The lady in the picture was emptying soya bean husks to use as fuel to heat the cauldron in which tofu were being deep fried. The title of the shot is taken from the first line of a Chinese classical poem written in 430 A.D. famously known as 七步诗, or the “7-steps verse” more about which you can read here.
