A Hindu Devotee

It is Thaipusam again. This annual procession by Hindu devotees is a colourful event for photography. I captured this image in 1998. This is another image in my series of Down The Memory Lane……..Singapore In the Nineties……NO.17

In Singapore, a partial ban on firecrackers was imposed in March 1970 after a fire killed six people and injured 68. This was extended to a total ban in August 1972, after an explosion that killed two people and an attack on two police officers attempting to stop a group from letting off firecrackers in February 1972. Our Chinese business men believed that the longer the chain of crackers that they fired is a sign of prosperity and good luck for the coming year. I captured this image at Hong Kong Street, in 1970. This was one of the images that I captured before the ban of firing crackers. (An image in my series of Down The Memory Lane………Singapore In The Seventies…….No.16)

Fifty years ago, I don’t think any body would think Tanjong Rhu would become a high-end private residential area. This image was captured by me in the sixties. The location was one of our favorite outing destinations during the weekends. (A series of image on Down The Memory Lane……Singapore In the Sixties……No.15)
