煮豆燃豆萁

煮豆燃豆萁
The above was taken at a traditional tofu factory located in Solo City. Actually, without our guides, we would never have found this factory that was tucked innocuously on a street. The lady in the picture was emptying soya bean husks to use as fuel to heat the cauldron in which tofu were being deep fried. The title of the shot is taken from the first line of a Chinese classical poem written in 430 A.D. famously known as 七步诗, or the “7-steps verse” more about which you can read here.

Putting On The Finishing Touches

Putting On The Finishing Touches
We visited numerous places producing a variety of handicrafts at totally unexpected (to us) locations during our visit to Solo City, from a gong-maker, to a wayang kulit maker, and to this place where acoustic guitars were handcrafted. This man was putting on the finishing touches to a handcrafted acoustic guitar by spraying on a protective coat of lacquer. The afternoon sun cast the perfect light which lit up the scene dramatically.

After our morning at the market in Solo City, we stopped by an indoor bazaar which was unfortunately too crowded inside for us to take any pictures. Waiting for the rest of the group to get back to our vehicle, we caught sight of this stall across the road. Initially, only the child was visible, playing with the display of clothes. Vehicles were passing in front of us, making it tricky to catch a clean shot. Eventually, an adult came into the frame. These were just the elements I was waiting for to make a picture story 🙂
