Seller of Joy (售喜)

Seller of Joy (售喜)
Photography has always encouraged me to look beyond the obvious subject and consider the stories that surround it. In this scene from Shenzhen, China, the balloons naturally draw attention. However, it was the vendor carrying them who held my gaze. The photograph became a reflection on the unseen effort behind the small moments of happiness that brighten our daily lives.

I am honoured that Seller of Joy (售喜) has been selected for the 21st Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition (NAPE) 2026. The exhibition holds special significance for my family, as my late father, Tan Lip Seng, was the inaugural Photographer of the Year when the exhibition was first launched in 2005 and remained a regular contributor for many years thereafter.

To Father, With Love

To the world, you were world-renowned photographer, Tan Lip Seng, Hon. PSA., FRPS., FPSA., MPSA, EFIAP., ABIPP., from Singapore.

To my elder brother and me, you were simply the best father we could ever have asked for.

You captured our childhood through your lens, leaving us with a treasure trove of memories — each photograph a testament to your love. Your passion for photography became mine too, guiding me to embrace it not just as a hobby, but as a lifelong pursuit.

Two years ago on a family trip to Desaru, I photographed my growing children (your beloved grandchildren), inspired by what you once did for us. And even then, you never stopped. You turned your camera towards me, capturing moments of me capturing them — layering memories upon memories, with your quiet, loving presence behind it all.

In your final days, you told us, “Every extra day (with us) is a bonus.” And indeed it was. We are profoundly grateful for every extra moment heaven granted us with you.

Together with Mum, elder brother, my wife, and your grandchildren, we will hold these memories close and cherish them —every single day of our lives.

Morning Swim At Middleton Beach

Morning Swim At Middleton Beach
It has been a while since I have posted consistently here and I am happy to share another picture I took during our recent vacation trip to Western Australia. The clear waters at Middleton Beach in Albany looked very inviting for a swim. Personally, I would prefer to swim in the comfort of the warm pool waters in Singapore given our very hot weather. However, the much cooler (but still sunny) weather and the approaching winter in Albany did not stop many early morning local swimming enthusiasts for sure!
