If you’ve been following my work here, you’d realise that one of my favourite angles for candid/photojournalistic pictures is to adopt a top-down, high vantage-point approach. One of the best places to get this is at the Tekka Market in Little India. I made my first visit to this place in 2003 for photography and have gone on repeated trips many times since. The market has undergone some renovations since my last visit sometime back. Luckily, the vantage point from the 2nd level of the market has been preserved, although the tungsten lighting that used to light up the place has been changed to energy-saving (read bland) fluorescent ones, making the tones less rich and vibrant.

Smiling At The Parade
As mentioned in my previous post, the Ngrupuk parade is held prior to Nyepi day in Bali. A competition was held for the ogoh-ogoh on parade in Denpasar. The event was full of pomp and pageantry during which many colourful and candid pictures could be taken. I was pretty happy that I managed to capture the above candid picture of one of the performers.

Want Ice Cream?
Prior to Nyepi day in Bali, the Ngrupuk parade is held during which papier-mÃ¢chÃ© statues known as ogoh-ogoh are paraded on a convoy around the town. They are then traditionally burnt to ashes in a cemetery as a symbol of self-purification (although I’ve read that these are usually recycled in recent times). We attended the parade in Denpasar on our trip and it was really crowded and humid-hot!. In between taking pictures of the parade, I managed to catch this ice-cream seller in great light. With the hot weather, he certainly was enjoying good business that day!
