A break from the candid people shots taken in Solo City, Indonesia… The above picture was taken at the little known (for now) Klayar Beach, on the southern coast of East Java. To reach the area at the right time in the right light, we had to wake up at an unearthly hour and travel way before the sun came up. We were rewarded by the sight of the powerful waves from the Indian Ocean crashing into the coast.

After our morning at the market in Solo City, we stopped by an indoor bazaar which was unfortunately too crowded inside for us to take any pictures. Waiting for the rest of the group to get back to our vehicle, we caught sight of this stall across the road. Initially, only the child was visible, playing with the display of clothes. Vehicles were passing in front of us, making it tricky to catch a clean shot. Eventually, an adult came into the frame. These were just the elements I was waiting for to make a picture story 🙂

Cockfights are pretty popular events in Indonesia judging from the numerous ones I have witnessed during my few trips to Indonesia. According to Wikipedia, cock-fighting is said to be the world’s oldest spectator sport going back 6,000 years in Persia. The combatant roosters are prized possessions, given the best care and conditioning, much like professional athletes prior to events or shows.
