Hindscarth Beyond Derwent Water

Hindscarth Beyond Derwent Water
This was taken at Derwent Water the evening before my previous post. Derwent Water was not as peaceful then as it was a pretty windy and chilly afternoon. I concentrated my efforts on the mountains beyond, particularly when the sun broke through the low hanging cloud cover and lit the sides of the hills in dramatic fashion. I didn’t know exactly the name of the hills and mountains I was taking then, but thanks to Google Earth, I figured out that the mountain that is mainly lit is Hindscarth, which lies between the valleys of Buttermere and Newlands, in the north-western part of the English Lake District. Ah… the wonders of modern technology … 🙂

Morning Colours Of Derwent Water

Morning Colours Of Derwent Water
The highlight of our journey to the Lake District (in Cumbria, UK) last autumn was at Buttermere… When we visited Lake District again this time six months after, Derwent Water became the highlight with its still waters and brilliant reflections. We were lucky to get good weather during our visit. This was caught early in the morning after sunrise (at this spot)… a feast for our photographic appetites before we headed back to our B&B for our actual breakfast 🙂

Iced (Derwent) Water

Iced (Derwent) Water

I am back from a trip to the UK (teaching on a course and vacationing with CY after). Crazy weather conditions (the coldest UK winter in a century!) meant a trip peppered with adventures: icy, snow-covered roads that were treacherous to drive on, made worse with a hired car that refused to start on several occasions in the cold, and which refused to climb a slope leading to our B&B in the Lake District! On my third visit to Derwent Water at Keswick in 3 years, I found an entirely different scene due to the cold weather conditions. The surface of the lake has iced over with the surrounding hills covered in snowy white. One man decided even to take a risky walk along the ice, reaching far into the lake, making almost two-thirds on the distance towards the nearest shore! We had fun skimming pebbles on the hardened lake surface, as they bounced and slid their way along.
