These small little yellow florets have been catching my attention on my recent visits to Gardens By The Bay. Does anyone know what they are called? I have been wanting to take a close-up of them. Contrasted against the almost pale white leaves and stems, I find the details within the florets literally eye-popping especially when viewed under the magnification of a macro lens.

Nearly ten years ago, I purchased the Canon 24-105mm f/4L USM lens (to complete the “holy trinity” which included the 17-40mm and 70-200mm f/4L lenses) and eagerly tested it on the traffic intersection facing my apartment on my Canon EOS 20D. Fast forward ten years on… I have just sold that lens and replaced it with the improved version 2 that came together as a kit with the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. From what I know, I am one of the first in Singapore (perhaps the world??! — many countries have yet to ship this yet) to receive the lens. I thought that it might be interesting to compare the same scene ten years on. To me, the full-frame image sensor of the 5DIV gave me a wider perspective and much improved image quality. The lens is also tack-sharp — at 100%, I can actually read off the road names on the street signs. I am definitely pleased with the results I am getting compared to what I got ten years ago 🙂
